Happy Holidays everyone!

Well, perhaps this isn't the most seasonal post, but way back last spring I started this bluebird collage and it's finally finished!

Those familiar with my art may already know my work is often inspired and guided by mythology. The bluebird has an interesting history.

In addition to being associated with happiness, in Indian legend, bluebirds were considered sacred because their blue color was like the sky.

The Cherokee and the Pima Indians believed that at one time bluebirds were white or grey, then one day Bluebird found a lake up in the mountains.

When Bluebird bathed in it, her feathers turned as blue as the sky. According to the Cochiti tribe, the firstborn son of Sun was named Bluebird

This collage is available for purchase in my etsy shop.

Wishing everyone a safe and healthy holiday season and a happy new year! xoxo

2 Exhibits and a Move!

The last month has been a whirlwind, but it's all good things : )

First, we have moved! We have relocated (about an hour NE of where we were living) to the Doylestown, PA area. We moved last weekend and are still exhausted, but we love our new home and couldn't be happier!

Additionally, I have 2 art exhibits I am participating in opening this weekend!

The first art show opens Sat August 3rd at the  Riverside Art Gallery in Ypsilanti, Michigan.   The title of the exhibit is "Map It" and features artwork from 58 artists from 19 states. Even though I won't be able to attend the opening, I am thrilled to be a participant. Here's a picture of the mixed media collage that will be part of the exhibit. It is titled "Love Tree" and was created on canvas using a Vintage US Map, acrylic, ink , and paper.

This piece is 30"x 48" so shipping this work was a bit of an adventure, especially in the midst of moving! We wound up using something called an Airfloat box ,an investment for sure, but it's reusable and was easy to pack. I also felt confident  my art would arrive safely.

To ship large art, get a really really big box and an awesome helper (my husband :) )

This exhibit will go online after the opening reception, so it can be seen nationwide!

Closer to home, Sunday August 4th kicks off a shared exhibit  at the Pebble Hill Peace Gallery in Doylestown, PA.

We Got Kittens!

I am proud to introduce our new kittens Franklin and Amelia! They are 9 week old litter mates and really couldn't be any cuter! While I've had cats most of my life, this is my first experience with kittens this young and we are having a lot of fun (they are asleep in my lap as I write this!) Today is their second full day with us.

I do want to mention that we recently lost our 17 year old cat Carmela. (I'm not ready to post a picture of her yet) We still miss her, and it's hard to know when to bring new animals into your life after the passing of a pet. My husband and I felt ready and I figure life is to short to postpone kitty cat love :)

Things I Learned on My Visit to the Aquarium

Recently, my husband and I visited the Camden Aquarium in Camden, N.J. We live in Suburban Philadelphia, so this was a pretty quick trip for us. I had been wanting to visit the aquarium for a while - it's one of those local things you always mean to do but don't get around to.

I had come across an ad for their turtle exhibit, and I was in!! I love turtles and they are one of my favorite art subjects (second only to birds.) I am in awe of  the age of their species (the earliest known turtles date from 220 million years ago,) and the odds they overcome to survive.

Turtles!

In addition to spending quality time with the turtles, here are some other observations I made during our trip....

There is this really cool fish sculpture outside of the aquarium - I love it!

When I see the fish at the aquarium, my excitement parallels the small children who I believe make up the aquarium's target demographic (with their parents of course!) I think this is because where I grew up, there wasn't an aquarium nearby. While I went on many trips to museums etc, aquariums weren't in my realm of experience. So, seeing these beautiful aquatic creatures really puts me in the mindset of a small child seeing them for the first time (in Buddhism this is referred to "beginners mind")

Seahorses actually hold tails as part of a courtship ritual...awwww - so romantic!

And last but not least, sea cucumbers can be trouble makers! The one in the lower left of this photo is named Larry is known to be quite a rascal among aquarium staff :)

Below are some photos of my art from the show..enjoy

Illustration Friday: Wings

Today's Illustration Friday topic is Wings - well, I just have to participate in this one!

This is a paper collage I created in 2007 titled "Acceptance/Integration." I was dealing with some very serious health issues at the time and the title of this collage refers to my search for health and healing.
